Parent Volunteer Opportunities: Download Application Here

Behind this great school is a corps of great parent volunteers. Please review the list below and contact the office to let them know you are interested.

1) Hospitality: Throughout the school year, there are a variety of events where the Parents Association could provide food items and assist with set-up or serving.
2) Office Help: Front Office to assist with making copies, guiding visitors, and being a role model for students.
3) Registration: Volunteers can assist with distributing lockers, parking passes, and schedules for the upcoming year. (Approximately one week before school).
4) Homecoming committee: Volunteers can help supervise events, provide food, serve, or assist in the planning of the events.
5) Media Center: Volunteers Provide support for staff and supervision of students.
6) Academics: Volunteers are needed to help research and write grants.
7) Membership: Assists in gathering new members and distributing information/materials to members.
8) Lunch supervision: Volunteers are needed to supervise the exits of the cafeteria and to assist students with special needs.
9) Security: Volunteers are needed to assist students in finding their classes and to help report truancy.
10) Smiling faces and role models always needed and appreciated!

Program Overview

Memphis City Schools, in partnership with Christian Brothers University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Southwest Tennessee Community College, Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis, and The University of Memphis, provides an opportunity for eligible students to earn college credit while simultaneously earning a high school diploma. The Early College Program gives high school students a jump-start on a college education and a career by allowing students to take college and technical courses while still enrolled in high school. Dual Enrollment provides an academic rigorous program that accelerates learning in a collegiate environment. College level courses are powerful motivators for students to work hard and meet intellectual challenges.

Early College courses are taught on the college campus, the technology center or at the high school by a college professor or a secondary teacher who is credentialed under SACS as an adjunct professor. Students are enrolled in college or technical courses with a combination of college and high school students or in “cohort or restricted” classes. Students who enroll in college courses gain experiences that ease and accelerate their transition to college. Dual enrollment courses blend the curriculum as a coherent unit of college-level work fused into a single academic program that meets the requirements for both high school and college.

Early College/Dual Enrollment College and University Information

Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant pays $300 per semester or $600 per year for eligible students to receive college semester hours and high school credits while completing high school graduation requirements.

Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant funds two college courses, each academic year for juniors and seniors.

LeMoyne-Owen College and Christian Brothers University accept the funds from the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant as full payment for one class (three semester hours) per semester for juniors and seniors.

The University of Memphis’ Institutional Grant funds and the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant will cover the majority of tuition costs; however $85 will be assessed to cover the remaining charges for tuition and fees. MCS teachers who qualify as adjunct professors teach the University of Memphis courses at the high school during the day.

Southwest Tennessee Community College accepts funds from the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant Program to cover $300 in tuition each semester. With available funds, the district covers the additional tuition of $105 for 3 semester hours.

Dual enrollment credit hours will transfer to all Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) schools. Other schools within or outside the state also accept the college level semester hours earned. Students and parents should consult with their college admissions counselors for verification.

Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant recipients will not lose eligibility to qualify for the full Tennessee HOPE Scholarship upon graduation and admission to college.

The accumulation of dual college credit will reduce the total costs of college tuition and time.

The High School Initiative Office must approve all dual enrollment courses for MCS dual enrollment course credit.

Early College / Dual Enrollment Eligibility

To enroll in the Early College/ Dual Enrollment Program, students must adhere to the following criteria:

Students must be a high school junior or senior and meet each college’s admission requirements.

An ACT composite of 19 or higher must be earned prior to enrollment.

In addition, the student must have an ACT Composite score of 19 or higher for selected courses. Students enrolling in mathematics courses must have ACT Mathematics sub-score of 19. Students enrolling in Composition I, Composition II or Oral Communication must have an ACT sub-score of 19 in Reading and English.

To maintain eligibility to participate in the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant Program, students must maintain a minimum 2.75 college G.P.A.

Students and/or their parents must be willing to provide transportation to the college or university sites for courses are taught on the high school campus.

Student must be willing to participate in dual enrollment coursework offered during the school day, after regular school hours and on Saturdays.

The University of Memphis/MCS adjunct faculty will offer courses at local high schools during the day.

Each semester letter grade of a college-level dual enrollment course receives a numerical value on the following quality point scale (QPS) DC/EC (8) where A = 6, B = 5, C= 4, D=1 and F = 0.

Early College / Dual Enrollment Procedures

ACT scores will be used to enroll students in Early College Courses. PLAN scores are being considered.

Memphis City Schools administers the ACT to all juniors. The PLAN test is administered to all sophomores. Students are encouraged to take the ACT by the end of the sophomore year.

Students and parents are expected to review each college’s admission requirements carefully.

Students are to complete the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Online Application (http://www.collegepaystn.com/).

Students and parents must complete the MCS Verification for Early College Enrollment, the college admissions applications and return all forms to the school counselor or the dual enrollment coordinator.

The school counselor will review the information for completeness. Both the school counselor and the school administrator must sign the MCS Verification of Early College Enrollment Form.

The school counselor will collect all required forms for the Dual Enrollment admission forms including:

· The Official High School Transcript with ACT scores.

· Student immunization records

The MCS Verification of Early College Enrollment forms must be submitted to the High School Initiative Office, Room 260, Board of Education, 2597 Avery Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38112

Students and parents are encouraged to attend a Dual Enrollment Orientation Session.
