Virtual Field Trip: Global Scavenger Hunt

Latitude and longitude coordinates are used to identify every place on the globe and are expressed in terms of degrees, minutes, and seconds.

Example: 66° 33′ 39″ N is read as 66 degrees, 33 minutes, and 39 seconds North. For the scavenger hunt items, you will have to identify the coordinates with degrees and minutes. Where appropriate you will also need to circle N or S (North or South) and E or W (East or West).

Part I (10 points)

1) Open Google Earth

2) Uncheck all the boxes on the left-hand side (layers).

3) Select “3d buildings,” “Borders,”

4) Unselect other options if they are selected

5) You may select street view if you want a 3-d view of your neighborhood.

Part II (10 points)

1) Search for Memphis, TN

2) Note that Memphis takes up a large area from North Memphis (35° 13’ N, 90° 2’ W ) to Southeast Memphis (35° 0’ N, 89° 47’ W ). The numbers are in the bottom left-hand corner of the picture.

3) Zoom in and out to easily move across smaller or larger spaces, respectively.

4) Find your house or school. Write the coordinates here ° ′ N , ° ′ W

Part III (10 points)

1) Find the Pyramid in Downtown Memphis, TN, USA, North America.

2) Write the coordinates here ° ′ N , ° ′ W (note: you only need to write the degrees and minutes, not the seconds)

3) Click on the ruler at the top of the screen and measure the width of the pyramid . miles
